Ingredients

  • 45ml Rittenhouse rye whiskey (1 1/2 oz)
  • 45ml Cocchi Vermouth di Torino sweet vermouth (1 1/2 oz)
  • 7ml Cointreau (1/4 oz)
  • 1 dash Peychaud's bitters
  • 1 dash Angostura bitters
  • Ice, for stirring
  • Garnish: orange peel

Instructions

  1. Combine rye, sweet vermouth, Cointreau, and both bitters in a mixing glass with ice.
  2. Stir until well-chilled.
  3. Strain into a chilled coupe or Nick & Nora glass.
  4. Express the oils of an orange peel over the drink, then drop it in.
Equal-parts rye to vermouth ratio and Cointreau accent evoke a pre-Prohibition turn-of-century Manhattan style. Modern canonical Manhattan is 2:1 rye to vermouth.
